About Project
The development of technologies, including information and communication technologies, has led to the emergence of new threats to national security and global governance issues. 5G technologies act as a basis for the development of innovations in the economy and society, so the development of fifth generation communications plays a significant role in terms of global leadership of states.
The project aims to investigate the markets for 5G technologies and the factors that influence their development. The aim of the project is to investigate the experience of international IT companies within the development of 5G technologies in developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America using relational, network data analysis methods and others. The project includes the following components: collection of open data on 5G in developing countries according to certain criteria (country, mobile operator, parent company, equipment supplier), creation of a relational database with data processing, preparation of an analytical report analysing 5G markets in developing countries and creation of an information and analytical portal.
The relevance of the project is due to the role of technologies, including 5G, in the socio-economic development of the state, political and technological influence. Leading technological states (USA, European countries) seek to consolidate leadership in the development of 5G technologies and occupy the market of fifth-generation communication equipment to ensure political and technological influence. Meanwhile, China, implementing innovation development strategies, is also developing advanced technologies, including 5G. The result of the emergence of the activities of both parties is competition for foreign markets, developing countries. As for the Russian Federation, corporations, research institutes and telecoms companies are working on the development of LTE technologies and 5G baseband equipment. Including a number of telecoms companies (MTS, Rostelecom), have developed software. In the context of sanctions pressure, the development of domestic technologies and the achievement of "technological sovereignty" are at the forefront of the implementation of the Digital Economy of the Russian Federation programme. The study of the possibilities of Russia's interaction with developing countries in the field of technology and the application of the experience of 5G development in developing countries also seems relevant to this issue.
Through relational data analysis, the authors will identify the types of actors (companies, government agencies, equipment suppliers) involved in technology development in the region and the relationships between them. This analysis will help to visualise the chain of technology development in developing countries, identify the main equipment suppliers and, consequently, determine the influence of equipment suppliers from the US, EU and PRC. The relational analysis will also be used to analyse the telecommunications market conditions in Asia, Africa and Latin America. In addition, to analyse the development experience of 5G technologies, the authors will conduct a comparative analysis to identify correlation factors across several criteria that will influence the 5G technology market. Among other things, the results of the relational data analysis will be correlated with the political factor, which considers the countries' participation in the PRC and US initiatives ("Clean network", "Digital Silk Road", etc.), and the economic factor, which will be correlated with the level of gross national income (GNI) per capita according to the World Bank.
The project will result in an analytical report, including a description and analysis of the 5G markets in Africa, Asia and Latin America and reflecting the main trends in this market, and an information and analytical portal, which will present the results of the analysis in an interactive mode and offer tools to analyse the collected data.
